Emplify Health’s Mobile Mammography Units Bring Life-Saving Screenings to Rural Communities
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Emplify Health is highlighting the ongoing impact of its Mobile Mammography units, vital resources that travel throughout the Bellin and Gundersen regions to provide accessible breast cancer screenings to women in rural communities. This innovative program is breaking down barriers to care, especially for underserved populations, and plays a crucial role in early detection and prevention efforts.
Both the Bellin and Gundersen regions of Emplify Health have been served by Mobile Mammography units for more than a decade. In the Bellin Region, an estimated 50,000 patients have been served in the 10-plus years the unit has been on the road, and in the Gundersen Region, over 22,000 patients have been served in 16 years.
“We are excited to highlight 26 total years of our Mobile Mammography units serving patients across our footprint,” said Emplify Health CEO Dr. Scott Rathgaber. “But what’s even more important is reiterating the screening message, letting patients know they don’t have to travel for mammography, and that we are here with them every step of their care journey.”
Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women, and early detection through regular mammograms is key to improving outcomes and saving lives. However, many women face challenges in accessing timely screenings due to geographic, economic or transportation barriers. The Mobile Mammography units address these challenges by bringing high-quality, convenient breast cancer screening services directly to neighborhoods, workplaces and community centers across Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota.
“Our Mobile Mammography unit is designed to reach women who might otherwise delay or miss their screenings,” said Rachel Schroeder, clinical supervisor, Center for Breast Care at Emplify Health by Gundersen. “By traveling to rural and underserved areas, we are making it easier for women to prioritize their health without the added stress of long travel times or limited appointment availability.”
Equipped with state-of-the-art 3D digital mammography technology, the units offer comprehensive breast cancer screening services in a comfortable and private setting. The team of specialized technologists and healthcare professionals ensures each patient receives personalized care and education about breast health. The Bellin Region’s Mobile Mammography unit also offers bone density screenings.
The impact of the mobile unit extends beyond convenience. By increasing access to screenings, Emplify Health is helping to detect breast cancer at earlier stages when treatment is more effective and survival rates are higher. Early detection also reduces the need for more aggressive treatments and improves quality of life for patients.
“In addition to providing screenings, the Mobile Mammography units serve as an educational platform, offering information about breast cancer risk factors, prevention strategies, and the importance of follow-up care,” said Emplify Health by Bellin Chief Nursing Officer Laura Hieb. “This holistic approach empowers women to take control of their health and make informed decisions.”
